I have been getting some emails asking about the relationship between the current production version (1.3) and the new beta version (2.0). As of this posting I am announcing that version 1.3 is at the end of its life. We will no longer be supporting it since 2.0 is the official replacement and all of our resources are set to support it.
2.0 has assumed the natural evolution of what it is to be TaskDriver. This version will be available for free in online form only. A license for a downloadable version will be available a little later but for the most part, anyone would be able to sign up, assemble a team, create projects and tasks and go on from there. Heck you'll even discover a few surprises that we have been cooking up the last few weeks.
My initial thought was to develop a subscription based model but I have think we would serve the community better if I were to leave it free for all. Its been a long time coming and we are almost there. Watch your emails and/or the website for the public beta announcement. It will be opening soon.

Just a quick post to keep you updated on the Taskdriver widgets. The Google widget is mostly complete and we are finishing up testing. We should have it out and available within the next couple of weeks.
The next widget is what we'd like some input on. We're planning on a widget for the newer Open Social framework. This will be fairly straightforward since the iGoogle widget is in place. The question to you is what other social networks would you like to see widgets for? Facebook, MySpace, etc? Give us your opinion and help us shape the roadmap.

A while back I mentioned that we were working on widgets/gadgets for
TaskDriver that would extend our application out to be used with sites
like FaceBook and Google. This week Joel has been making a good bit of
progress on the Google Gadget for the TaskDriver 2.0 Dashboard and I
have a sneak peek preview of what it looks like!
Here it is as seen from the customized Google homepage:
When completed any TaskDriver user will be able to view task from the Google home page. How awesome is that?
Cole is also moving along with his tasks and should be wrapping them up soon. Once that is completed, I will open up the beta test for all who would like to participate.

Well we have had quite a few people asking about the beta and when they
will be receiving their access key and well my answer is.... SOON.
We allowed the first set of beta testers in and we found a few things
to address and so we are working on them now. I had an epiphany one
night about how our dashboard (index page) should look and after some
thought I decided that we would change it now rather than later. Cole
is working hard on that and so when his ready to test it we will open
the beta door again (no pressure Cole :P)
Some other enhancements had been made, Like being able to edit your
LAST task note after submission was executed. This will allow you to
fix your a mistakes on notes since communication is so crucial on
tasks. Doesn't seem like much now but later when your blowing and going
on your projects it will come in handy! You'll see what I mean.
When Joel and I discussed some of the subscription types we were going
to put into the new version, I was initially thinking of a tiered type
service.
Tier 1 - was free and allowed you to create a limited amount of
projects with assignees and tasks- It also displays advertising
material.
Tier 2 - is a payed tier that gave a you little more options. projects, tasks and so on.
Tier 3 - is the payed tier that is "platinum" no limits on anything.
This is the current plan (don't worry it doesn't cost an arm and a leg
like some others out there) and since then I have thinking about
another approach.
1. TaskDriver 2.0 being totally free to use online. No limits on projects, tasks or assignees.
2. Allow users to buy a TaskDriver license, download the entire application and install it inside their corporate networks.
I am still kicking this idea around. If you have any comments on this - by all means post em!
Our forums are finally making a comeback. We are working on them now
and soon you guys can express yourselves there. We will let you know
the moment they go live.

Just thought I'd drop a line to say hi, Im Cole. I'm almost the newest addition to the team, As i hear we have one newer programmer joined up as well. Well everone was presented with a list of job recently and asked to choose what they wanted to do, and as i currently dont have the internet at my house(just moved in) I was slow to respond, But never fear I still program. I have a nice little piece to do that will be seen in the next release. Well thats all for now I just thought i would introduce myself, ttfn

Does Microsoft secretly fear Google?
After watching the news and
reading articles about companies like Google and Microsoft, I am now
pretty confident of the reason MS is fearing Google.
With the onslaught
of popular Google tools like Gmail, Docs, Photos and Calendar, who
wouldn't be? Google has more tentacles than ten squids and from the
looks of it, there is no stopping the mammoth sized machine.
Early in 2007 Google
began chipping away at the enterprise level of mail by offering "Google Apps".
This poses as a serious threat to the MS Enterprise Server offering
when you begin look at the costs associated with buying licensing and
paying a team to run it.
Google outshines and outwits MS on nearly
every level. Why else would MS want to buy Yahoo? Without a large
presence on the internet they will have some trouble keeping up as I
feel that Google is setting its sights high enough to actually replace
the software giant in the future.
Yes. I said it. Google is slowing but
surely making everything available online. Why do I need to pay for MS
Office when I have Google Docs? Lets face it - in
a decade or so, Google could be pumping out PCs with just enough OS on
them to boot up to Google.com. Microsoft needs to wake up. But then again it might already be to late....

The 2.0 beta is now open and going strong. If you'd like to get in on
the testing, sign up for our news letter over on the index of
taskdriver.com. We will be sending invitations out to our news letter
participants on a weekly basis until all are notified. The beta is
going well so why not sign up?
On another note, Joel and I have been discussing an idea he had about
creating a widget for FaceBook and MySpace users. The plugin would
allow TaskDriver users to access their projects and tasks from the
FaceBook and MySpace sites. Its really a good idea and really doesn't
seem like much effort is involved. More on this a little later.
Our staff is growing! You will soon see another programmer that has
joined our team. His name is Cole Diffin and will be starting with us
soon.
